Nasty e-mail via hotmail, how can it be traced?

My freind has recieved a threatening e-mail from someone at hotmail, related to where they work. Is it possible to trace the hotmail account and possibly the i.p address of the computer that logged onto the site and sent the e-mail?

Reply:MSN Hotmail addresses are free addresses so you can use any name you like and it cannot be traced You may be able to get the IP address but even then that may be no good to you the person could be using a computer in a library or internet cafe. or the ip address could change daily.





If you're receiving harassing, threatening or otherwise potentially illegal email, then by all means, involve the appropriate authorities.





Otherwise, the delete key is your friend. My approach would be to delete the mail immediately and ignore it completely. If your email program supports it, I'd even create a rule to automatically delete the mail from that account as it arrives, or if you have a spam filter blacklist it on the spam filter.

Reply:Believe it or not but, one way of finding out is to do a search via Google or Yahoo of the E-mail address.
